3 Tips on How to Produce a Consistent Swing

It has taken me years of practice and experimentation to come to the realization that I should not be using 100% of my power on every swing that I take. Not only is this detrimental to the health of my lower back and hips, but it does not produce the best results on the golf course and will hinder my development as a golfer. I cannot tell you the number of times that I have watched a student produce three or four good swings during a lesson, gain confidence and then try to absolutely nuke a ball into the stratosphere. And I do not need to ask them if they tried to swing hard because I can see it in the way that they lose their balance and disrupt their tempo.

Whether you are a beginner or a skilled golfer, integrating these tips will help you elevate your game:

1. Maintain Neutral Grip Strength

Learn to hold your club with a medium amount of grip. Imagine squeezing the grip with 6/10 or 7/10 strength. This technique is essential for avoiding unnecessary strain and maintaining control over your shots.

2. Establish a Balanced Stance

Find balance and strength in your feet, ensuring stability in your stance. Balance will bring both accuracy and distance, allowing you to hit the ball with more consistency and avoiding mishits.

3. Stick to a Consistent Pre-shot Routine

Keep your pre-shot routine consistent and persistent. Do not stray from your pre-shot routine because you hit a bad shot or a good shot. Reminding yourself to stick to your routine will help you stay focused on your next shot instead of dwelling on the previous one.

The Art of Subtle Power

What is it about the human mind during golf that makes them gain so much confidence in such little time to the point where they believe that they are Rory McIlroy and can blast it 325 yards? And this certainly does not only happen to beginners but to amateurs of all skill levels. The thought that you can hit an absolute bomb down the fairway after hitting one or two good shots is preposterous and detrimental to their development as a golfer. Sure, there is nothing more fun than lining up a shot and swinging through your shoes and seeing the results of your efforts. You could send one flying down the fairway and set yourself up for a good second shot or you could chunk it and send it flying 15 yards along the grass to the red tees. In my experience, it is more common for the average golfer to have to deal with the latter.

Harnessing Balance and Tempo

It is more beneficial to the student golfer to develop their swing and unlock their power methodically. Once you can establish strong fundamental knowledge and application of the golf swing, you can then start experimenting with increasing club head speed and shot distance. You can start understanding your capabilities and trying out different swing speeds, hitting half-swing shots and then moving into the power swing that you so badly want to hit. When Tiger Woods was becoming older and stronger he asked his father if he could try to swing as hard as he could and his father told him that he could only if he could stay balanced and keep his tempo. Without those two things, his golf swing would break down and he would not be competitive in the field of professionals with whom he would match up against.

The Importance of Fundamentals

So, that is what I tell my students. Once you develop strong fundamentals and you can keep your balance while maintaining tempo, you can start to swing as softly or as hard as you would like. And then you can start to learn that the game of golf is intricately complex and requires more from a golfer than just raw power. It demands strategic placement of the ball which requires accuracy. It demands a soft touch around the green which requires patience and focus. And it absolutely requires you to be able to read the greens and putt. It is difficult enough to develop a fundamentally sound swing off the tee so when a golfer is learning how to play it is crucial that they do this because this will help them perform from the fairway, in the rough, in the sand, around and on the greens.
